Project Experience

Chlorinated Solvents: Above Ground Storage Tank

Challenge

Chlorinated solvent was identified to have been released from a former 2,000 gallon above ground storage tank system (AST). Chlorinated solvent was detected in site soil and groundwater at concentrations suggestive of the presence of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL). The site consisted of about 20 feet of clay soil overlying shale bedrock.

Action

AcuityES mobilized to the Site and conducted a membrane interface probe (MIP) investigation to delineate the chlorinated solvent source area. Geophysics techniques were used to delineate top of bedrock and identify potential fracture locations. An extensive investigation was conducted with sampling of subsurface soil, shallow groundwater, and bedrock groundwater. Aquifer testing was conducted to assess the hydrogeologic properties of the Site.

Results

AcuityES delineated source area soils and identified approximately 4,200 yd3 of chlorinated-impacted soil. Shallow groundwater impacts were delineated and approximately 35,000 ft2 of chlorinated-impacted groundwater was identified. Chlorinated impacts to bedrock groundwater were also identified at the Site. Remediation of the Site is pending the Client review of AcuityES’s cost estimates for various potential remediation alternatives.
