Confidential Dry Cleaners (Remedy 2009-2010; LTM through 2013)
A commercial real estate developer initiated a campaign to generally update and remodel his retail strip mall shopping center. During this process, one of the tenants who operated a dry cleaning operation was identified as responsible for a release of tetrachloroethene (PCE) to the environment (both soil and groundwater). AcuityES professionals were retained to develop a remediation plan that could be implemented very rapidly between the day that the former tenant vacated the space, and the day that the remodeling crew arrived to begin new construction. The approach adopted by AcuityES included removing the front glass windows to the tenant space, removing the non-supporting walls, and then commencing a coordinated a grid-space injection of CAP18-Me® [commercial remediation chemical product supplied by the Carus Corporation, Illinois], into the groundwater beneath the tenant space, and into the down gradient plume. The CAP18-Me® enhances the development of ideal Site conditions for reductive dechlorination of chlorinated compounds. In addition to injecting the reagent, AcuityES professionals coordinated a slip-stream injection of selected microbes to enhance the reductive dechlorination process. Following the completion of injection activities, AcuityES professionals conducted interior and exterior soil remediation by excavating the source area soil to the depth of the water table. The excavated soil was disposed off site in a regulated landfill, the excavation was backfilled, the floor was replaced, the front windows and doors were replaced and the tenant space was released to the construction crew. Groundwater monitoring has produced evidence that the concentrations of PCE are approaching the final Site closure objectives.
